American Greatness

Who made America? Some say America was made by slaves who picked the cotton and built the White House. Some say it was the Irish who dug the canals, or the Chinese who laid the track from shore to shore and blasted a way through the Rocky Mountains. Some insist on replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Day, and have taken up a so-called righteous indignation on behalf of the “Noble Savage” (who would have done anything to live in a world of American inventions, created by Fulton, Edison, Bell, and the Wright Brothers, to name a few). Some have tried to recreate or reverse engineer America and plant it in Africa or South America or Afghanistan, but it never works. That’s because, while history is man-made, America is more than History. God’s hand was on America. What happened here had never happened anywhere else before. America was not only a good idea, it was the best idea any man ever had (of governing himself) and now men seem bent on killing the goose that laid the golden egg. For a hundred years, the false prophets of Freud, Marx, and Darwin have sown the tares that are being harvested today. Evolution and secular humanism is the Godless, flat-earth philosophy that that has spread like the Black Death of the Middle Ages, infecting school children across the globe. Our former President described how his idea of marriage had “evolved,” as if that is a good thing. It’s not. Darwin teaches there is no super nature, only nature. Freud teaches there is no “good,” and Marx teaches there is no God. So here we are marching in the streets and protesting the God of the Bible, what’s good, and what’s for our good. As for the noble savage, there was nothing noble in the Incas ripping out the hearts of their enemies. There is nothing beautiful about animism, witchcraft, feudalism, or being forced to build the pyramids of Egypt or the Great wall of China. America was the first country to lift the inalienable rights of man and the ideal embraced today that all men are created equal.
It appears that in the fullness of time God allowed mortals like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams to come together in a Super Nova of political genius to form the greatest nation on earth. The writing of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were brilliant and brighter than the any previous idea put on parchment. It was brighter than Liberty’s torch itself. Those two documents were the blueprint for a government unlike any other seen on planet Earth, but they are not sacred. Washington, Lincoln, and yes, Ronald Reagan were all sinners, yet no nation on earth has ever sung “Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord” like America. America challenged the so called “Divine Right of Kings,” and that shook the world, causing its most powerful army, that of the British Empire, to rise and try to crush such sedition and insolence of the common man. Yes, there was slavery. Yes, the truth is Washington owned slaves. Well, so did, and Shaka Zulu, and the Ottoman Sultan Abdül hamid in 1776. Oh, don’t forget Qianlong, Emperor of China. It was considered high fashion in 1776 England for rich ladies to have a black child “servant” as a status symbol and accessory; and woe to the poor unfortunate who was hit over the head on Dock Street only to wake up chained to a galley on some British Man-of-War. Progressives are very selective when painting their own pictures of the past. And to all the self-righteous liberals who would disrespect the genius of American freedom, I only wish they could have lived one day under the tyranny of Lenin or Stalin in Russia or in the godless world Robespierre. It is also ignorant and uncharitable to suggest that slaves loved slavery or slaves had a good life. Loss of freedom is miserable. On the other hand, BLM people should thank God they did not live in Rwanda in the 1990’s when black on black genocide saw one million black lives slaughtered. The truth is “all men are created equal,” and so is “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Today’s generation is like the Pharaoh who “knew not Joseph.” Worse, they know not God. Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven, given among men whereby we must be saved. Having said all that, if God had his hand in fashioning America as an instrument for good in the world and for his glory, we must remember she is just an instrument. Musical instruments must be tuned, agricultural instruments must be sharpened, scientific instruments must be continually re-calibrated. The Bible is the tuning fork, the whetstone, the plumb line and the gold standard. The U.S. Constitution can be amended or altered, but not God’s Word. Governments rise and fall, they come and go, but faith sings “mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord,” and faith is faithful till he comes.
